FWEP00022 Aileen Hoe

In this episode, we have a very special guest who believes that learning how to have fun and experiential learning are the two key ingredients and thatā€™s crucial to oneā€™s learning.
She is Aileen Hoe the Director of Chinese Champ she is also the assistant secretary for Twi Libraries Malaysia, Committee member of We care Journey.

Children are our Future
Teachers are influential for whatever teachers act students will emulate it. The educator plays a big role in the lives of students. Hereā€™s what Aileen shared about how they get along with the parents, guardians, and kids as well.

(2:19-42) I work with the parents and I train the teachers as well our motto is we make learning fun. So when the kids come through the door, what they do is they have fun and be themselves. Our environment is very nurturing whereby we use positive affirmations for the children and they come and be themselves and we work with them from the mindset.
(3:27-4:02) ā€œI believe as educators we are influencers for the next generationā€ and always believe in this ā€œI believe the children are our future Teach them well and let them lead the way Show them all the beauty they possess inside, give them a sense of pride to make it easier let the childrenā€™s laughter remind us what we used to beā€

(4:03-11) So that is the power of being an educator we influence not only the children but also the parents and guardians.

Be innovative
Educators must always make sure to upskills not just themselves but even the curriculum as well. Educators must teach what works best. Aileen shared:
(4:37-41) I believe in this motto ā€œWe donā€™t need to reinvent the wheelā€
(4:53)So what I do is I take from the bust a little bit of here and there not so much of like one specific system because I always believe that it has to be customized. And what I had customized for this year may not be applied for the following years because the children they change and live with the technology and so on. Different parenting style as well. So we have to always upskill ourselves.

(5:19- 51)So what we practice to make learning fun so my forte is using music and movements and speech and drama and we put those estimate elements in the teaching of the language. So when the kids come they will have fun and they really feel that they are learning but at the same time through music movement they learn discipline they learn to take turns, they learn to respect one another when they take the turn to pass on to precautions from one person to another person. They learn to listen and thatā€™s recall and response in excellent songs. They listen and they then to receive and to give as well and a lot more can be done from there.

(6:33-41)We believe in a VAK system Visual Auditory Kinesthetic so thereā€™s a lot of personalised attention given although it still in a group.

Calling to teach
Not everyone has the passion to teach young kids and same as with our calling. We all have different calling with different ways of how we respond to that call.
After knowing our call itā€™s up to us if weā€™ll take the call or just leave it. Aileen shared her calling and love for teaching.
(7:01-19)Well I was in a corporate finance line for about 5 years and my dadā€™s been a businessman and my momā€™s been a teacher all her life so I always joke that Iā€™m the best of my parents because Iā€™m an education a teacher Iā€™m sitting in my own business Iā€™m half of Half in each of them.
(7:28)I quit my job full-time to go into teaching.

(7:38-16) Once a teacher always a teacher. I was still teaching part-time. I found that very tiring but it was still very fulfilling. But what makes me decide to actually let go corporate finance for good although the pay was good and all that, was actually I gave myself a question, a life changing question I ask myself ā€œWhat would I do if I only have 1 year to liveā€? So the answer was very very clear. I knew that I wanted to be with the kids and I just want to be happy and I realized that itā€™s my calling and thatā€™s what I love to do for the rest of my life.

Roadblocks are temporary

Tears, sweat may shed in our face but these are just part of life as human. Working and living without this stuff is not challenging at all. Aileen shared how she conquers those roadblocks she encountered being an educator and businessman as well.

(8:42-9:42) It has been sweat, tears, of course, thereā€™s a lot of challenges, financial challenges itā€™s not easy being a working mom I went through pregnancy being a new mom. So I went through a divorce a few years ago and that was very hard but I would say that thereā€™s a lot of voices some of them into no voices, some of them are external voices. It was very hard to distinguish from whatā€™s right and wrong until I actually sit down and think back like what kind of clarity to achieve clarity so that I will be able to really listen to my heart and what I need to do and how to prioritize but I will say that I am very thankful that I have a very good support system.

(10:42-11:17) I cried a lot, I laugh a lot as well along the way and I guess itā€™s through that I begin to understand myself better and I take it as a journey and looking deeper. I would say that I donā€™t even know that I have this side of myself. Until I went through it and realized that thereā€™s nothing too difficult to be able to overcome when you have the right mindset towards things.

(11:26-39) Sometimes too much of a mind person and when it comes to feeling it. Honestly, Iā€™m the kind who numbs my feelings to be able to not feel pain.

Look at yourself

Sometimes because we are so busy with our business, family, and friends we tend to forget to look after ourselves. We forget that we need to take care of ourselves. Aileen encourages us to:
(12:21-50) I spend a lot of time on my own as well to feel myself and to understand because different face of situations it brings out the best and the worst in me. So itā€™s about getting myself space to understand that okay I need support and Iā€™ll come outreach out to the person, people whom I know who will be able to give me this emotional support at this time

(12:56-13:23) If you feel that you just need to go into a cave and stay for a week, a few days a few hours give yourself permission to do that. Because taking care of yourself is most important as a woman and as a mother as well and I would say that if you donā€™t take care of your emotional and mental health then it definitely will not help in whatever you are doing with our kids.

Know your priorities

There were people who can still say that ā€œI have no timeā€ but in fact, we have 24 hours that we enjoyed every day. It only varies on how we manage our time and priorities.
Aileen shared about her priority.

(13:33-38) I always like to think that I have it all but again itā€™s how you define all

(13:42-14:16) The first thing everyone has 24 hours in a day so itā€™s how we make best of the time that we have how we prioritize. Sometimes I have to put sudden things down to be able to attend to other things. I would say that I always make sure that whenever the phone rings if itā€™s my daughter who calls me or my family members who call me Iā€™ll leave everything aside for them if there's anything thatā€™s required from my members of family I will attend to those things first. Thatā€™s my priorities

Self-Development

Self-development is not easy. It takes a lot of effort and teachable heart to be willing to adapt to change in life in order to be developed. Aileen shared a lot about her self-development

(14:50-15:31) Iā€™m a fresh graduate from Money and You and Iā€™m very proud to say that and I learned so much from their experience. I have learned to be able to open up and I realized that thereā€™s actually a safe space with a big bunch of people but we come here for the same reason. We have experienced a lot of things in life previously. Sometimes we donā€™t know what weā€™re doing is right or wrong but when I hear other brave people sharing on stage, I realized hey everyone goes through a very unique journey and we are not here to judge, we are here to open up unmask, strip.
(15:57)We donā€™t know what we donā€™t know right?
(16:35-57)Iā€™m a big believer in self-development and in continuous learning even since young Iā€™ve always been curious and been a thinker and wanted to fix things. I mean fix people. So I realized that itā€™s not my responsibility to fix people I should fix myself. So for things to change first I must change.
(17:01-38) Because of the things Iā€™ve been going through the journey of my life I realized that hey thereā€™s a lot of things that Iā€™ve yet to learn and itā€™s really exciting to be with the group of people in a personal course and to see everyone coming for the same reason which is to empower themselves to develop themselves. The energy is really high and it gives me a good opportunity to kick start that and what happens after. So thatā€™s when a good support structure is very important and the discipline to see it through.

Pieces of advice

Aileen shared a lot and give some pieces of advice about those women who are being grabbed back because they are afraid to take risks.
(17:57) I would say that we women are lucky because we are very intuitive and believe in yourself, trust yourself thatā€™s the most important thing.

(18:18-27) At the end of the day, listen to your heart because your heart and your intuition can never go wrong

(18:46-19:36)Again trust yourself what youā€™ve decided to do and the other thing is if we have knowledge in one area because like as an educator I realized that I love teaching so I upskill myself in teaching so I attended a lot of classes to be able to get qualifications and the knowledge to be able to educate. But at the end of the day, I realized that I donā€™t know business I love teaching so much. I love being in the business but I cannot be in the business to understand it on a macro skill. So that was my struggle in the beginning but eventually, when I realized and acknowledged what I didnā€™t know and what I still donā€™t know, I tend to be able to look how and search for at the areas that I need to improve myself in

(19:37-25) So go for seminars and get connected to like-minded people so that you have that emotional support if you are a mother and also you need to manage certain things at home yes, get the support that you can but I know that sometimes we need to be on our own because not many people are may be as lucky. Itā€™s about not expecting perfection from what youā€™re doing be kind to yourself be gentle to yourself and at the end of the day always ask yourself that, In that situation at that moment have I done the best that I could if the answer is yes. give yourself a pat on the back and say yey! well done. Celebrate that little milestone of achievement because the next day when you wake up is gonna be another long day.

Know what your strength is

Thereā€™s a quote that states, ā€œWhen I am weak, then I am strongā€. Aileen shared the importance of knowing your strengths and weaknesses.

(21:49-22:03)So itā€™s always important to know what our strengths are and where are the areas of challenges when it comes to communication so that we can still remember the objectives of the communication at the end of it.

(22:40-23:01)Actually, I have my own quote you know, YOLO right? You Only Live Once but mine is YODO You Only Die Once. So you go and living a life and think from the space of abundance and just continue to hit your calling and do what you love doing from your heart

Soul Rich Woman

Aileen defined Soul Rich Woman as being brave:
(24:33-44)A woman who believes in herself and itā€™s not afraid to live what she believes in that I would say a soul rich woman

F word
Women desired to have the F word- Being Fabulous, Having Freedom and Financial Independence. Aileen shared her favorite F word.
(25:04-43)For me itā€™s being free. Freedom is the word that I believe in because freedom means that thereā€™s no limitation there are no boundaries and with freedom in their mind, anything is possible there endless possibilities and you are able to look at yourself in a positive light and freedom means you are not restricted. So you feel free and light
