(1:22-1:35) You know it’s funny, I think I wanted to be a speaker from a very young age but I always like, that is your post entertainment career job like I always knew that after entertainment this would all I would do.

(1:49-2:08) There’s no way if you don’t pick up, you know, read a blog or listen to a podcast that you don’t realize that there’s a huge distractive shift that is happening in old media. I couldn’t ignore it anymore and I was like I want to be part of the new wave. I think I always did a kind of no, it was about the timing.

(2:23-3:07) I think I was definitely exposed to thought leaders all throughout my life, I think I chose to ignore some of the really good advice from thought leaders than just being young and a bit vacuous. I don’t know if it’s about that I am always aware that that industry existed but I didn’t know much information about the industry and that took a lot of work. Cause you have to learn an industry before you just jump into it. One big piece of advice if you can’t live doing a full-time hassle and you’re thinking about living for your side hassle, a speaker that you know actually Eric Feng told me that this is the best advice ever, Eric said to me Simone, do not leave your full-time hassle for your part-time hassle until your part-time hassle is earning more than your full-time job.

What are the challenges you faced?
(3:28-3:38) I think, firstly because of the line of work that you have gone into my first issue is that I’m a minority female speaker and I look quite young for my age.

(3:57-4:16)  I actually found that there are a lot of Singaporean event organizers, conference organizers who are female who wanna see another Asian female on stage and that’s the sisterhood. So they’d actually, really helped me get paid speaking gigs in the last 5 months. Because they also want to see a change too which is fantastic.

What are the strategies you can give to the thought speaker?
(4:40-4:57) I think firstly, especially if you’re working a full-time job and you want to be a better speaker you’re so blessed in the year 2019 you can order a whole range of incredible public speaking books online. I literally did this for 2 years on the side of my radio because I wanted to learn and to be the best speaker I could be.

(5:26-5:43) If you don’t have a big budget and you’re just starting out and you have an interest you can do that. Following day, you can employ a public speaking coach and there are a lot on the market. I’m one of them too, I do it but I don’t really publicize it’s just that is a side thing to help people and they can really give you the spoke help.

(6:25-6:40) My third tip would be, be thirsty for knowledge. Just start putting that seed or that gold in your head and it’s really interesting once you do that the universe will conspire to find your positions and places where people can help you. So just have that gold in your mind.
Why did you choose to focus on this area?
(7:06-7:28) Firstly, I’ve only just entered the human connections space so please understand I’m like a student of this. I literally studied this and that means that I don’t do it perfectly a hundred percent at a time but I literally go out and interview people whom I believe a public human connections superheroes. So people who don’t get to predict that connections spaces therein.

(9:26-10:00) The 2020 goal is to write the human connection book and it’s going to take a lot of time I think I’m actually talking to some book writing coaches right now, cause I really don’t know the first thing. I know I can write so I did a communications degree and some professional writing units in university but when you’re submitting for the format for the book and all that kind of stuff I’m not really clear. So I’ve peg that as my goal for this year to write a book featuring the case studies of these incredible people that I interviewed and the takeaways that I get from them.

How do you manage your routine?
(10:37-10:57) I think I’ve got the lovely help of this incredible virtual assistant in Manila and she’s from a fantastic social media start-up course of connected women where it gives jobs to highly educated Filipino women who want to be close to their family so she can work remarkably and help me at my stuff so that helps.

(12:33-12:47) I can tell you that this is something I think about so much because first you know, I take it lightly and secondly I think there’s a huge change in consciousness now, where people who have a platform do not want to put on nothing into the space.

(13:07-13:46) Here’s the other thing as well that generating influence is a very lonely space like I am probably very different to most women in that I don’t have this gene in me that I feel that self promotion is a dirty word. So I’ve never had this thing I kind of promote and market like a man and it’s a very lonely place to be in, because gradually around the world and even more so in Asia as Asian women it is not further this attractive likeable for a woman to put herself out there and sell herself. But then here to tell you honey, that changes we’ve seen force me to in the UK, in America, North America as a continent fort down eventually to get to Asia.

(13:47-14:34) Well this will no longer be a Stigma and I’m just here to say that I started this before anyone else. Like I just don’t have that fear. As much as gradually, I’m very Asian. The one that really Western about me is that I don’t feel that it’s dirty to promote and I know sometimes it’s not likeable to everyone but here’s the thing about being a brand, people cannot be apathetic about you so either a lash proportion is a big turn off, they don’t like, it’s too much for them, too in their face, Okay! I’m sorry I cannot please everyone. You cannot please everyone. The worst thing you can do is worry your brand down and be vanilla. I have people feel no emotional connection or no reaction to you, don’t care about that!

(14:34-15:14) You speak to the people who need you and that’s how I sit. I speak to the women who want to be financially independent, who don’t want to be Taytays. The women who are driven by purpose and passion, who are not driven by money. They are the women that I speak to. I speak to the women who’d say it’s okay to be a bookworm but also wears sexy clothing, that’s okay. I speak to those women who go there and no limits or barriers. I don’t have to categorize myself and we’re a little bit behind here in Asia with that like we’re still culturally, there is categorization I think everyone in my Asian female coaching clients has a story about being told by an auntie or a mother, Pssh be quiet! Don’t be so loud! Don’t speak up!

(15:15-15:36) I mean, I grow up like that as well. In order to push out entire gender forward, we have to let a little bit of that go. I’m not saying everyone’s gonna be outspoken as me or as public as you Genecia, that’s not for everyone that in order for us to increase gender equality in Southeast Asia, we have to be a little bit okay and letting that go.

(16:00-16:11) A soul rich woman is someone who lives with passion and authenticity. And I think there’s a level of bravery source hearing that. Soul rich woman just has a little bit less fear than the average woman.

(16:26-16:57) It’s not going to be easy. I recently had one of my best friends. I found out that, it kinda did one of my independent women instagram post and I found that this girl whom I consider one of my best friends which having a real rant about it. And that was really hard, that broke my heart a little bit so know that being a soul rich woman can also lead to falling to the side of some people who might not share your views and your bravery, that’s also okay as we grow and evolve.

(17:03-17:11) You can go to my website simoneheng.com and I’m also at all social media, everywhere. Probably, too much!

(17:20-17:44) I just wanna say, with Genecia said, current. You know, this is one thing I learn from social media very early on, nobody cares what you used to be and what you used to do. Everyone is obsessed with what you are doing right now and what you are about to do and that’s really sad, with the world that we live in and I know that is but if you want to market your small medium enterprise or your personal brand as a business, you have to relink and we should accept that fact.

(18:09-18:40) Oh gosh, you know I have a client form Switzerland, Asian female living in Switzerland. She’s incredible and we let her spend one whole hour of coaching just to get her post one Linkedin post and she’s incredible. That fear of what people think is so great and I just wanna tell you here number 1, it is like you could expedite the success of your business by putting your face at the front of it because now people want to identify the human face, the human connection so that’s a fact that we have to accept.

(18:41-19:09) And also you need to accept that not everybody would love and be at peace with you in general, in life or even online so why not do it anyway? People are gonna say something whether you don’t do it or whether you do it. People always got something to say so the view of people, having opinions about you is holding you back, forget it! Accept and move on and Do it!

(19:13-19:43) It was so hard for me like I had been living behind this veil of different race of Asians having created my brand or having control of my brand and I never really shown authentically who I was so I was just like Xiao Meme, like Hello Kitty like just cute and don’t share my opinions but the thing is exactly what I said, like being vanilla win in the year 2019 because social media, you know, digital business has changed so much. So it cannot compete like that anymore.

(19:57-20:05) Life is not a competition. Life is not a race. You just have to be the best version of you and accept that you are unique and different.

(20:19-20:55) Financial independence! Nobody talks about this enough it’s why I agree to do this podcast because listened to me, I’m telling you, the older you get, I’m 35 now, more than the tables I sit around. Most of the stories of separation in marriage and things that come up and one of the biggest regrets those women say after their divorces are that they didn’t put their, if they bought an asset with their husband and that they let him put their name on the lease and they didn’t put their name down or they didn’t set stronger financial goals for themselves because when they were married they kind of went under his wing and let him control everything.

(22:06-22:47) The very first book I read at 23 years of age, I was literally earning nothing and didn’t have employment passport in Singapore. I was like out from modeling agency, this is back early 2000. But I read Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad, and I learn about the difference between a property being an asset or being summing that milks your money and it was a very interesting book because it just started me thinking about financial independence like it’s an important step to start me thinking about it and then it ended up setting the goal for the next 10 years just by getting that in my head.

(23:19-23:34) So I have a deadline to set it up. I bought a software to create this online community months ago and I was traveling to do it so I pretty much got the logo, it’s going to be called Simone says community and Simone says it’s got tile quotation, that’s very cute.

(24:40-24:58) These women are having issues that they need another person with the Asian culture background to help remove their confidence issues, bullying issues from the public speaking issues because if you don’t have the confidence or you’ve been put down, you then have no confidence to even open your mouth. Let me alone teach you breathing techniques.

(26:50-27:23) Your voice matters. Your opinion matters. Everytime you sit in a meeting, I have seen so many times as working, you know, and you don’t speak up and you say nothing, you’re letting a piece of you die and I know because that happened to me. I was so scared to even open my mouth. There was a time when I had a boss, bullying another female employee. A female boss bullying another female employee and now that I have left, I really regret not to speak out and say Hey, you don’t speak to her like a dog! That’s is not okay.

(28:01-29:00) Think about authentically who you were as a child. Most of the time when we lose our way and our actions are no longer in sync with our authentic self because life may be hit us with some hard knocks so go back and think about who you were as a little kid. When you were innocent and you didn’t have any auntie telling you to do this and that or any boss telling you to do this and that, who were you as a kid and I’m gonna tell you what that little child dreamt, what that little child wanted. Attack with that energy and sit with yourself in a quiet place and dream big like when you were a child and I swear to you, that will reveal your 2020 goals then if you just sat there in your space right now with your phone going off, with your kids screaming, really remember the biggest awakening for me was remembering who I was when I was a kid and manifesting that innocence, that joy when I was goal setting really works.

 Key Takeaways:

  1. Everyone is authentic.
  2. Our voice and opinion matters.
  3. Women should not be judged according to what they wear.
  4. Be brave in achieving your dreams in life.
  5. Enjoy life to the fullest.
